It's wonderful and a great escape from the crazy daily grind.

99 days to go – Contest winners and a new light show!!

2010vanfan

I would like to start by saying thank you merci to everyone that posted a comment to enter my latest pin contest! It was really exciting to hear from so many people! The winner of the ‘100 days to go’ and 2009 Halloween pins is Patti J!! Thanks Patti! And, ’cause I was pretty excited about so many entries I also drew for a second prize… an RBC pin, which will be going to Vicki Y! Yay! I like giving away prizes! In fact… if you read a bit further into this post I will put up another pin contest!

But, as a lot of today (November 4th) was 100 days to go there are definitely some activities to cover about the day… First off, my Mom Sharon and Amanda from Australia were strolling through downtown Vancouver today, and they very sweetly thought of me near the Vancouver Art Gallery and even took a picture for me!!

Amanda the Aussie with the Olympic Countdown Clock - on 100 days to go!!

This is so sweet! I couldn’t believe it when they told me they’d taken pictures specifically for me! What a wonderful thing to be surrounded by people feeling the Olympic Spirit! This may be a ‘little thing’ in the ‘grand scheme’ of things… but to me it is the little things that light up my day! I hadn’t even thought of stopping by the Olympic Countdown Clock yet they thought of me while walking past it! I feel very privileged to have so many wonderful people in my life!

* * * * *

OK, had enough sappiness out of me yet? Probably! There were definitely things going on today. The Mascots were in Whistler (sounds like Gregor Robertson and Ross Rebagliati were too) and people everywhere were wishing each other “Happy 100 days to go” (OK, well, I was wished this at least twice today by Robyn and Krystal, so that is nearly ‘people everywhere’ right?). Something I hadn’t heard anything about until a Tweet today, was the lighting of a set of Olympic Rings in Coal Harbour! Apparently they lit them up at 5:45pm tonight! And yes, I had to work (rats) but I’m a little sad that there hadn’t been a bigger deal made of this! If I had known a few days ahead of time I probably could have sorted out having my break then and made an effort to scurry down to see the lighting! But I found out a bit too late! Request – if you know of an upcoming event, or know of people that know these things… please let me know!! I’m all about experiencing the Olympics and I’m sad when I miss cool things like this! Anyhow, here’s what they look like (and yes, I’m going to try to see them tomorrow night!).

Premier Gordon Campbell (I love how many Team Canada uniform pieces he wears!) and VANOC CEO John Furlong with the newly lit Olympic Rings in Coal Harbour!

Oh, and did you know I’m an Olympic nerd?? Of course you did! I recently did something very silly, which I regret… I didn’t go to Victoria for the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Canada. Honestly, it hadn’t occurred to me at all to go over, but on the day, and on the days since then, I’ve felt like I really missed out on something. Now, I had been thinking for a while that it would be neat to see the Torch Relay as it passes through Calgary or Montreal, our previous Olympic Host Cities, so when the pang of missing Victoria really set in the other night, I made the decision that I will go and see the Torch Relay as it passes through Montreal!

I visited Calgary already for the Red & White Game in August, so I feel that I’ve already done some tribute at least to Calgary. But Montreal… I’ve never been to Montreal… and I’ve not seen the Torch in person yet… and plane tickets on Air Canada were pretty darn cheap! So I decided to buy my Air Canada tickets to Montreal and go be involved in this historic event! I am so very, very excited! I am so very, very grateful that we are hosting an event of this magnitude that gives me the opportunity to go and explore my own country!

I will leave Vancouver on December 8th, spending the 9th exploring and the 10th following the Torch, and returning on the 11th (with some more exploring time). I am so excited! But I’m looking for help/ideas! I have not been to Montreal, I don’t know where to stay or what to do (besides the Torch Relay) while I’m there and I’m looking for your help! Send me some suggestions or thoughts! I look forward to hearing from you!

And finally, a new contest! The Mascots will be celebrating their 2nd birthday this month (November 27th!) and I have a pin for you! (Though I don’t have a photo tonight! I will tomorrow night!). It is the Mascot Birthday pin, which is also the HBC pin of the month and is limited to 1,200 pins (I think, please correct me if I’m wrong). Anyhow, it’s super cute! If you’d like to win one of your very own post a comment answering the following questions before 5pm on Sunday, November 8th!

Question: What word is Mukmuk’s name derived from? And what was the original language? I will put your name into the draw twice if you can tell me what sports equipment is in Mukmuk’s burrow in his intro video on the Vancouver 2010 website!

With that little bit of excitement… bonsoir, goodnight!

The Torch is relay-ing and we're only 13 Mondays from the Games!!

by 2010vanfan

WOW!  WOW! WOW!  I’m excited! :D   Yes, I know I’m pretty much excited every day, but today is really great!  We are now only 100 days from the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games or 13 Mondays!!  And 128 days until the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games!!  WOW!  There is at least one new pin out today… And that’s what I’m going to start this post with, though it’s been a pretty great day!

As many of you know, I have a contest on right now to win a ‘100 days to go’ retail pin, along with this year’s Halloween pin.  However, I’m especially pleased to let you know about another, much, much harder to get ‘100 days to go’ pin.  This is a corporate pin made by Atos Origin, the worldwide IT partner of the Olympic Games!  It is simply spectacular!! One of my favourite pins to date!  And if you work for Atos Origin it’s even better ’cause you get the packaging to go with the pin!

100 - Atos packaging

This is the packaging that Atos Origin employees will receive their pin in. Yes, I somehow managed to avoid using it myself, but mostly 'cause I wanted to make nice pictures of it!

Atos 100 days pin

The Atos Origin '100 days to go' pin!

Here is what Atos Origin has to say about their spiffy new pin!!

“The Vancouver 2010 Olympic 100 days countdown pin features the Atos Origin fish (powder blue surgeonfish). It is distributed amongst Atos Origin personnel, but 250 have been allocated for Olympic pin collectors! Watch atosJenn’s Twitter page (http://twitter.com/atosJenn) for more details on how to get one of these pins.”

“The following is some information on Atos Origin and the Olympic Games:

As the Worldwide IT Partner for the Olympic Games and Top sponsor since Salt Lake 2002, Atos Origin integrates, manages and secures the vast IT system that relays results, events and athlete information to spectators and media around the world. Atos Origin is an official partner and sponsor for future Olympic Games including London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016.”

“For more information, please visit Atos Origin.”

And thanks so much to @atosJenn for the sneak peek and for my very own pin!!  So sweet!

What other trouble was I causing today?  Well, Jo-Anne came to visit and brought along two fantastically wonderful pins that I have been dreaming/hoping/pining for!  As well as a present for ‘100 days of 2010vanfan’!!  I didn’t know I’d get presents!  But it sure was tasty!

Jo-Anne and I, with the wonderful presents she brought me! Pins and a '100 days of 2010vanfan' Cheerios necklace! Yum! We were cheering on the Canucks tonight but my jersey is in storage right now so I went with Team Canada, and we won!!

Thank you Wade and Jo-Anne for finding me these pins!  I cannot thank you enough!!  They’re awesome!

Last night I wrote a bit about new contests, but was falling asleep before I got very far.  Sad, I know, however a reader has come to my rescue!!  Rachel of Tinkerblue blog has already posted up a lot of contests.  Check them out here!  She also included these contests in her email to me, though she hasn’t had a chance to add them to her site yet!  Thanks so much Rachel!  I’ll have to enter a few myself!

Here are the ones that Rachel sent but doesn’t have on her site: yet Inniskillin (trip to Vancouver 2010 including tickets to an event and some Vancouver 2010 clothing!), Tourism Vancouver (tickets to the Olympic Closing Ceremonies), Celebrate Cheese (1 of 10 Vancouver 2010 Gold Coin Collector’s sets), My2010Stuff (wallpaper for your computer, toques and tattoos!).  And one from me: Chew to Win (1 of 3 trips to Vancouver 2010 plus the chance at weekly prizes!).

Whew!  It’s late again, and well past my bedtime!  Talk to you tomorrow!  Goodnight!  Bonsoir!

PS – Don’t forget the final round of ticketing starts at 10am Pacific on Saturday, November 7th!!  Register for an account now if you don’t already have one!  Ticketing will be done through a virtual ‘waiting room’ same as in the second round!

100 Days to Go

It is coming up so fast!  We have the opening of the Olympic Superstore, the unveiling of the Team Canada 2010 Olympic and Paralympic uniforms (and the unveiling of the uniforms of those of us in the Olympic Superstore!) to look forward to in the next 30 days!

Mukmuk on an "ice machine" - for collectors much clever than I am...

Mukmuk on an "ice machine" - for collectors much clever than I am...

What else do we have to look forward to in the immediate future??

Well, first off, if you are hoping to be part of the Vancouver 2010 experience, up-close with the athletes, on TV, live within the Sea-to-Sky corridor, at least 15 years of age, female and available for about 40 hours per week during the games then Vancouver 2010 wants you!!  They are looking for specialized volunteers for flower and victory ceremonies!!  I am totally jealous of the girls that get to do this, however, there is no way at all that I will have that much time free.  I joke about not sleeping for two weeks during the Games (work, volunteering in the Vancouver Athlete’s Village, attending events, and blogging, but really I should get a few hours per night… maybe…).  If you don’t fulfill these requirements either, but are still interested in applying for a job or a volunteer position, check out this link.

So what did I learn about Vancouver 2010 today?  I learned that I really know nothing about pins yet… :(   I thought I was getting there but there are so many sources that it’s really hard to keep up.  The image above is a new pin called “Mukmuk – ice machine”.  Seriously?  Mukmuk on a zamboni and I don’t have one yet?? Seriously??  How did I miss this?  How did I find out about this at work when we don’t sell them?  And very, very few others have them for sale either?

I would like to have it on record that this experience should be reinforcing that I should specialize in my pin collecting.  The smart thing to do… the only sane thing to do, is to select a style, group, set, or some sort of confining feature in your pin tastes and only collect those (for example: “mascots” “National Olympic Committees” “Sponsorship pins”.  Have I done this?  Well… I would love to say that I have, but it would be a lie.  I collect everything that looks interesting (which is really quite a lot, and seriously makes the lady interested in one gold coin look very smart!).  I think I have recently been meeting people interested in trying to collect all of the retail pins (that is, pins available for purchase from a store such as the Olympic Shop I work in).  But really, this is already a vast number of pins!  There are also sponsorship pins, governmental pins, bid pins, law enforcement pins, National Olympic Committee pins and likely others (stay tuned for others… I am hatching a plot).  Check out pincollectorsite for a low-down on some of the options (personally pleased to see the Cold FX slider hockey goalie pin as his pin of the week, since I recently scored one of those!).

Cold-FX slider goalie pin - tres cool!!

Cold-FX slider goalie pin - tres cool!!

So, with about 3 months until the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games… do you need to specialize your pin collection or can you be a “pin mutt” like me??  I so far have mascot pins, sponsorship pins, retail pins, government pins, bid pins and related “non Olympic” pins.  And I have this problem that I’m not a very good trader.  I like to collect pins that I like.  I do try to get doubles of some of my pins so that I can trade, but I am innately adverse to risk, and somehow pin trading seems risky to my “pack-rat” nature.  I do have a selection of pins that are theoretically for trade but have difficulty parting with them.  Though to be fair, I’ve had little opportunity to part with my pins, except for my experience at the Olympin Show in Richmond, where I think I did alright, mostly due to the honesty of the traders I talked to…  I got a few pins that I wanted and surprisingly I had pins of interest too…

So, I guess it comes down to this, a question to you, my readers… Do I keep collecting (and hopefully bringing myself to trade for…) any pins that I find interesting or should I be a good pin trader/collector and start specializing?  I cannot have all of the pins (neither enough money nor ferocity to chase them down).  Should I buckle down and aim for complete “sets” or go with the flow and see what I happen to like (dangerous as this often means buy!)?  And how do I become a better trader?  I know that part of my reticence is that I want a story with my pin.  So far all of my pins have a story, sometimes nothing more than my own silliness, but really they all say something to (and sometimes about) me.

With only 3 months to go before the Games start I really need to sort myself out.  Pins are going to get more abundant, interesting and enticing as the days go by…  I really am asking for help.   What would you do?  What would you suggest?  What pins interest you?  Oy vey!  What’s a girl to do??  I really hope you have some answers, or at least thoughts, for me (or pins??? maybe pins???).

So what pins am I pining for currently?  Besides the above Mukmuk on an “ice machine” (I will always say zamboni, but that must be some sort of trademark infringement…).  Here are a few…

And yes… there are way more, but I’m going to stop now.  Though I’ll throw this out… if you send me a pin (or a few, so I can trade and share with readers) I’ll show it on my page with a link to your site.  This is only valid for Vancouver 2010 related pins, as I will have my blog shut down if I advertise for non-sponsors or non-related folks.  However I’m looking forward to hearing from all of you!  Even if you can’t send a pin, send in a pin story!  I’m always keen to hear what’s happening.

PS – Check out Cold-FX.com for your chance to win a limited edition pin set!!  Or… tickets to the Games!!  Contests through their website, Facebook, purchase and others!  Thanks Cold-FX!!  Love my goalie pin by the way, and hope that I win a set of your pins to show on this blog!!
